University Hospitals Sussex Featured in the BMJ: A Milestone for End-of-Life Volunteer Support

We’re excited to share that the Friend in Need Volunteer project has been featured in BMJ Supportive & Palliative Care, through a spotlight on the volunteering service at University Hospitals Sussex.

This publication is a powerful endorsement of our mission: to ensure no one has to face the end of life alone. The article, co-authored by our friend, Palliative Care Consultant Dr Ollie Minton and colleagues, presents anonymised data from the first six months of the service, showing the tangible impact of trained volunteers offering emotional support and companionship to patients and families.

Key outcomes include:

  • Over 170 patients and 400 family members supported
  • 130+ hours of bedside care delivered
  • 39 care-related issues raised with clinical teams
  • A wide range of support including listening, advocacy, quiet presence, and practical help

Healthcare professionals overwhelmingly praised the service, noting its role in enhancing holistic care and relieving pressure on clinical staff. Families expressed deep gratitude for the comfort and connection volunteers provided during critical moments.

This recognition in the British Medical Journal is a testament to the power of compassionate care and the dedication of the Friend in Need Volunteers at University Hospitals Sussex.
