James Paget University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has worked in partnership with The Anne Robson Trust since 2019. Led by Coordinator John, the Butterfly Volunteers offer time, compassion, and a calm presence to people in their final days of life, supporting not only patients but also those close to them.

Meet The Coordinator

John Gilligan - Volunteer Coordinator

Hello, my name is John Gilligan, and I serve as the Volunteer Coordinator at James Paget University Hospital in Gorleston, Great Yarmouth. I began my career at JPUH in 2008 as a Healthcare Assistant on Ward Fifteen (Respiratory), later advancing to the role of Healthcare Practice Facilitator.

In 2019, I was honoured to take on the role of Butterfly Volunteer Coordinator. In this position, I established and now lead a dedicated team of Butterfly Volunteers who provide compassionate support to patients receiving end-of-life care.

Since joining the NHS in 2004, my guiding principle has always been to remain patient-focused and to ask, “How can we make a meaningful difference for our patients, their loved ones, and their friends?”

Being part of an incredible team of volunteers is deeply rewarding. While we may not be able to change the outcome for patients at the end of life, we can help improve their journey and ensure their experience is as comforting and dignified as possible. That, to me, is truly invaluable.
