Jason’s why…
I joined the Anne Robson Trust because good support at the end of life is a cause I believe in, and the solution is simple but so often lacking.
A few years ago, I heard that a close friend’s newborn baby had multiple issues and was unlikely to survive.
I felt underequipped to help them. I was afraid of saying the wrong thing and making things worse. I didn’t know if they wanted space, or if I should ask to visit them. I caught myself putting silver-linings on things during our conversations, instead of acknowledging the sadness of it all.
It opened my eyes to the importance of good support at the end of life – for patients and their families. Our friends were well supported by hospital and hospice staff, and given amazing support. But not everyone has that.
I don’t believe that all time is created equal. Scarcity creates value, and the precious last days, hours and minutes of a person’s life have an added poignancy.
If we can do anything to improve the experience of people and their families in their final moments, it is our duty to do so. The solution isn’t rocket science – it is people, sitting with people, giving comfort and companionship.
I’ve been a fundraiser at multiple charities, and there are few causes I believe are more worthwhile than this one.
That’s why I joined the Anne Robson Trust.
