We are looking for volunteers to help us support people who are nearing the end of their life, and those caring for them.

Community Friends will be able to help in a number of ways:

  • Ambassador: Get involved in community events and talks
  • Telephone Support: Support people via our telephone service
  • Support Groups: Help us set up and run Bereavement Groups in the community
  • Fundraising: Run fundraising events and support others to raise funds
  • Office: Join our team in the office to help with vital administration tasks

Our team has extensive experience managing and caring for volunteers.

We do our utmost to create a team spirit, to support each volunteer individually, and to make the most of their skills, by providing a comprehensive, interesting and interactive training programme.

Frequently Asked Questions

We are looking for people who are friendly and patient and able to empathise with other people, demonstrating strong listening and communication skills.

You don’t need any specific experience or any previous training for this role, and we welcome applications from a wide range of people, spanning all backgrounds and ages.

The time commitment varies depending on which parts of the role you are interested in. We are very flexible and will work with you to ensure that it works with your schedule.

Our volunteers will not incur any costs. You’ll need:

  • Access to either a landline or mobile phone
  • A PC or tablet to access our telephone and volunteer management systems, plus internet access
  • A quiet space in your home to make calls in a confidential manner

You will receive full training to ensure you are fully prepared to provide support on the telephone and face to face. Our skills-based training will be delivered over two days and will equip you with the confidence and skills you need.

Training will be delivered face to face in or around Stevenage Hertfordshire.

We place great importance on continuous personal development, so you’ll receive further refresher training and yearly safeguarding training as part of our programme.

The wellbeing of our volunteers is at the heart of everything we do – we will support you every step of the way.
