Our Helpline celebrated it’s first birthday on 16th March 2022 and to mark the occasion we were delighted that our Patron, Professor Nancy Fontaine, could join us as the guest speaker at a celebratory online get together with our Helpline volunteers.
Nancy is the Chief Nurse at one of our partner hospitals, the Norfolk & Norwich University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and has a wealth of knowledge about end of life care. Here’s what she said about the vital role that we play when working in partnership with NHS Trusts:
“The Anne Robson Trust is so needed. Too often, a patient’s final days in hospital are not what they would wish for. Their family members are emotionally or physically distant, and there are complex family dynamics at play. Sometimes hospital clinicians do not recognise that a patient is dying, or they fail to clearly communicate it to the family, to give them time to prepare.
The work they do helping hospitals set up teams of ‘end of life’ volunteers helps restore dignity, so people can experience a ‘good death.’ They are the catalyst that helps families normalise the turbulent emotional rollercoaster of grief.
Before working with the charity, too many patients at our hospital were dying alone, and their families simply had nowhere to go. Now we are rated ‘outstanding’ for end of life care – an improvement in large part thanks to our partnership with the Anne Robson Trust.”
Whilst volunteers play a crucial role within the wards of a hospital, the volunteers on our Helpline can also help offer wider community support too. We are on standby to take calls every weekday, between 11am and 5pm. All calls are free and confidential.
