Wow it’s been a busy few months for the Anne Robson Trust team. This week we celebrated 3 years as a registered charity … And what a difference 36 months makes!
In May 2018 Jo and I were working from home, running the team of Butterfly Volunteers at The Princess Alexandra Hospital (their first coordinator joined the team in January 2019) and making plans to start work with more hospitals.
Today we have a staff of 7 – three full time, and four part time, and we have recently moved from our tiny office to more than double the space upstairs which gives us more room for our expanding workforce.
Our new Helpline service launched a couple of months ago – providing support to people who are dying, and those who are caring for them. We know that facing the end of life can leave people feeling isolated and alone. Calls are already starting to come in from a wide range of callers – people struggling with talking about death and dying to a loved one recently diagnosed with cancer, to professionals who care for dying children needing support and a listening ear.
Our mission to help hospitals set up teams of volunteers to support patients in the last days and hours of life, and their families is still firmly in place. We are talking to a number of organistations from across the UK – Covid19 has made us realise that we can provide support virtually – enabling our small team to work nationally and create a broader impact.
Today, in Dying Matters Awareness Week 2021, we were very pleased to welcome Stevenage MP, Stephen McPartland to our office to hear about the work that we do.
He said “I really appreciate having the opportunity to meet with the Anne Robson Trust CEO, Liz Pryor, and her team at their offices in Stevenage Old Town during Dying Matters Awareness Week 2021. Death and dying is an important issue that affects us all. However, in some circumstances, particularly in the current climate, many people are facing the end of life alone, as loved ones cannot with be them.
The Anne Robson Trust Helpline is a wonderful support service that’s free to use and if you or someone close to you are struggling, please call 0808 801 0688”
